LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 8 June, 2010
From LILUG
Meeting Summary
Announcements
- The Annual LILUG Picnic is being held this Saturday, 12 June, 2010, at Bethpage State Park. A clever name has yet to be devised.
- Matt Newhall, LILUG President, mentioned that NASA recently issued a warning about potentially severe solar storms occurring over the next few years.
Speaker
- Mark Drago - BtrFS (Butter Filesystem)
- LILUG Vice-President Mark Drago spoke about the Butter (or Better!) Filesystem.
- He mentioned that the next releases of major Linux distributions should have this as their default filesystem. Mark gave a brief history of BtrFS and said that it has been in the mainline kernel since version 2.6.29. It is being worked on by developers at the major distributions.
- Mark discussed various features of BtrFS, and then closed his talk with a working demo by mounting flash drives onto his laptop and managing them via BtrFS tools under Linux.
- His slideshow is available in OpenOffice Impress format for your enjoyment. (We will post the PDF version soon - we need to modify the wiki behind the scenes to accept PDF file uploads!)
Group Business
LILUG By-Laws Amendment Vote
- LILUG government proposed a change to the definition of membership in our group's bylaws (in summary, that to be a member, one merely needs to either sign up to the main email list, or sign up on a one-time registration list)
- The amendment was passed by a vote of 20-0 by those present at the meeting.
