LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 8 May, 2001
From Lilug
Meeting Summary
Speakers
- Joseph McElroy - PostgreSQL
- Joseph McElroy from Everyday Office, Inc., spoke about postgreSQL. His talk included the correct pronounciation for postgreSQL (post-gress-Q-L'), the history of postgreSQL, features of the database engine, comparisons to MySQL, and what Everyday Office has to offer to small businesses looking for an n-tier office environment.
Discussions/Announcements
Thank You
- LILUG President Matt Newhall, on behalf of the group, wanted to extend a "thank you" to our group's coordinator, Jim Browne, for arranging the speaker this evening.
Recent IT Layoffs
- Matt N. offered words of encouragement to those who have been victims of recent IT layoffs -- key point is that Linux is what a lot of companies are looking for, so there is employment out there for good Linux Sysadmins/Evangelists.
IOUG - Oracle on Linux
- LILUG Secretary Matt Surico gave a short summary of an Oracle on Linux roundtable discussion he attended while at the annual International Oracle Users Group (IOUG) conference. The Linux enthusiasts (numbering around 25 or so) discussed their various issues and concerns about running Oracle on Linux in a production environment. There were few people actually doing this. Most of the participants are running Linux on home machines and/or on test servers. A key benchmark many people need to see is how well Oracle performs on a Linux box vs. an identical (hardware-wise) NT server. A key concern of most is support of Linux, both sysadmin/DBA expertise as well as vendor support.
Group Business
Loki
- The group agreed it was a good idea to go in on an offer from Loki (the Linux gaming folks) where they can offer User groups 50% off list price for games. LILUG can buy the games and sell them for 15% markup. John Marr volunteered to coordinate the effort of taking orders from members.
Raffles
- Railroad Tycoon II: Jay
- Soldier of Fortune: Luke
