Discussions/Announcements

Linux News

There have been several news stories of various vendors doing ports of their industrial applications to Linux.
Important security info: There have been several security holes in a variety of the Linux ftp daemons. Make sure you use the patches or upgrades from your particular distribution to fix these problems!

Problems

One user reports problems getting Linux to recognize a modem on a Compaq PC. It was mentioned that Compaqs are notorious for proprietary hardware and it just might be that this particular modem (an internal one) just won't get recognized by the kernel.
A user with RedHat 5.2 and the 2.2 kernel notes that his external Zip drive, running off the parallel port, is OK, but the printer, sharing the port, is not. It was suggested he try
modprobe lp
and find out if the lp module is being loaded correctly or not.

Other Topics

A few members mentioned that there were problems with the current mailing list (lilug-discuss@flat.lilug.org). Tom Rothamel, list admin, will investigate, and asked for samples of any bounced messages.

Group Business

New Meeting Night

Matt N. reminded us again that LXNY meets on the first Tuesday of every month, just as we do, and that this has the potential to cause conflict for those who wish to attend both their meetings and ours. Matt recommended that we move our meetings to the second Tuesday of each month. No one present objected, so this was adopted as our new meeting date.

Donations Requested

Though secretary Ari Share had not arrived yet, on his behalf Matt N. requested that we make a donation before the end of the meeting so that we could (a) purchase our own coffee pot, since we've been using one on loan since the inception of the group and (b) replenish the group's general fund, which has dwindled to approximately five dollars.

Install Day

Matt N. proposed that we have our first Install Day on the Sunday after our next meeting (which would make it Sunday 18 April 1999). We will need to advertise about it. One member volunteered to distribute information about this event to the 54 libraries on Long Island. We will need a form on our web site which allows a person to RSVP with his/her system information so that we can make sure all the hardware is supported and deal with any other issues. Rob Dumas will create the front end form which will collect the info and Matt S. will do the scripting so that the pertinent information goes to our mailing list so we can all contribute to ensuring a smooth Install Day. We should be prepared to handle between ten and fifteen systems. We should also put out a disclaimer that we are not responsible for anything that goes wrong with anyone's system as a result of Install Day!
