LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 2 February, 1999
From Lilug
Meeting Summary
Speakers
- Tim Sailer - TCP Wrappers
- Rob Dumas - The New LILUG Website
- Rob walked us through most of the main pages and then opened the floor for suggestions from the group on the site.
- Directions to the meeting site should be more clear
- Possible discussion on parking for the night should members encounter problems
- Rob wants us to come up with links to other Linux pages
- We should probably link to the major distributions (at least Debian, RedHat and Slackware) and also to the host of the pages, Coastal Internet.
- We should do a fair amount of advertising for our next meeting, which features Lincoln Stein, author of CGI.pm, as the featured guest speaker.
- We should create an RSVP form for the InstallFest (Matt Surico volunteered to create this)
Discussions/Announcements
New Kernel
- Matt Newhall announced that the 2.2 kernel is out and recommended that www.linuxhq.com is the best source for complete information about the new kernel and associated issues.
- Major new features include:
- New way of handling kernel modules
- Changes in the way PPP is handled
- LP modules and printer support
- A few members contributed "war stories" about their experiences with the new kernel, including troubles with PLIP. Many of us appear willing to wait a little while longer before putting the new kernel on "production-type" boxes. It is likely that at our upcoming InstallFest (in April) that we will feature both the 2.0 and 2.2 kernel series.
Problems
- One user reports that suddenly in KDE, his kmail won't work (this was to be worked on separately after the meeting)
Other Topics
- We probably should discuss real contingency plans should SUNY Farmingdale not become a viable meeting location after several key members graduate in May. Some possibilities were presented by Tim Mui, but these entail halls owned by townships which require at least 51% attendance by town members, or high fees.
- Tom Rothamel may have possible contacts for getting half a table at local computer shows. Look for more info on this on the mailing list
- Possible places to recruit new members we should investigate:
- Recruit at LXNY
- Melville LI PC Users group (meet at Massapequa HS, perhaps)
- Systems users group (AS400)
- LI Computer Assoc (LICA)
Group Business
LILUG Officer Elections
- Matt Newhall called for any more nominations for the four officers' positions. The official nominees and the subsequent vote, taken up by the members present:
- For President, Matt Newhall (12 for, 0 against)
- For Vice-President, Tom Rothamel (12-0)
- For Treasurer, Ari Share (12-0)
- For Secretary, Matt Surico (12-0)
- A charter committee will be formed so that our constitution may be drafted. More information will appear on the web site concerning this.
