LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 14 November, 2000
From Lilug
Meeting Summary
Speakers
- LILUG President Matt Newhall announced that he had been contacted by Dan D. of CTTC and that neither Caldera nor RedHat were able to come to the distribution discussion slated for this meeting.
Discussions/Announcements
Future Talks
- Users have been clamoring (both at the meetings and on the mailing list) for a speaker to talk about Apache configuration. John Pomeroy has volunteered to give this talk (and Matt Surico will assist in a discussion of configuring apache with Jserv for servlet/JSP support). This will be the focus of our next meeting.
Meeting Topics for 2001
- Matt Newhall led a discussion about future meetings. We will probably shoot for an Install Day to happen early in 2001, possibly in January. We may or may not be able to reschedule the distro panel discussion.
Linux SIG
- LeftOnRed mentioned that there is now a Linux SIG in the LI PC Users' Group taking place regularly at the Howard School Library in Farmingdale, and members are urged to read more about it on their website.
Problems
- A couple of questions came up on the use of samba.
- One member asked if samba can be used with PAM to coordinate Unix users with samba users. It was noted that this is the reverse of what is normally done, and that no one had knowledge of a module that could do what the user wanted.
- Another member asked a general question about the use of samba and NT login domain controllers, and it was noted that the passwords for NT could be used as authenticators in samba by pointing the smb.conf file at the NT domain controller (more details can be found in the samba docs).
Group Business
Motion: LAN Parties
- Tim Sailer made a motion, which was seconded, that we do LAN Parties (like at the previous meeting) quarterly, or at least regularly.
Nominations for Officers
- The following persons have been nominated to run for office for the year 2001:
- President: Matt Newhall (incumbent); no other candidates at this point
- Vice-President: Ari Shaer (incumbent); no other candidates at this point
- Treasurer: Peter Capazzi (incumbent); no other candidates at this point
- Secretary: Matt Surico (incumbent); no other candidates at this point
- A new position of Event Coordinator, whose responsibilities would include arranging speakers for meetings, was created without dissent of those present, and James Fung was nominated, current unopposed, for that position.
Group Discussions
- Members spent the majority of the remaining meeting time arranging informal discussions in small groups.
