LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 13 April, 1999

From Lilug

Meeting Summary

Discussions/Announcements

Alpha Centauri Game Port

Tom Rothamel mentioned that there will be an Alpha Centauri (game) port coming to Linux soon.

Package Managers

We had a brief discussion comparing and contrasting the package mangers and installation techniques for RedHat vs. Debian.

New LILUG Mailing List

Matt Newhall joined the meeting and reminded everyone to sign up for the new LILUG mailing list at http://www.lilug.org/mailman/listinfo/lilug. Some users pointed out there were problems with error messages on the list, so Matt Surico, one of the list admins, was going to check on that.

InstallDay

It was noticed that there was a very low response rate for the Install Day this coming Sunday 18 March (1 PM at Lupton Hall: check the door of Room 163 to see exactly where we'll be). We had 2 persons responding as of the meeting, but there will probably be others, including members of the group themselves, who might bring PCs in needing install work.

Speaker Topics

Matt N. asked for ideas for speaker topics. We'll continue to look for speakers from outside the group. As far as internal speakers, we voted on the topic for next meeting, which will be editors, and we also decided that the most popular one that people wanted to learn was emacs. So Matt Surico will be giving the talk on this next meeting. Other topic ideas were databases under Linux and using 'make'

Small Group Discussions

The meeting then broke off into smaller groups for help/discussion. Some listened to a kernel build talk by Matt N., others worked on install problems or talked about recent Linux developments.
