LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 11 November, 2003
From Lilug
Meeting Summary
Open Forum
- We held an open forum discussing the recent news item that RedHat was removing commercial support for the free desktop. Fedora is now a separate project.
- John Palmieri, LILUG treasurer, presented the pro side of the split, discussing how binaries are not for free now, how distributions are now packaged for enterprises, about the changing business plan for RedHat, and about community support for software that comes with no monetary charge.
- Chris Knadle, LILUG vice-president, presented the con side of the split, discussing that now RedHat Enterprise and Solaris pricing is competitive, and so how much more difficult is it to pitch RedHat to upper management at a company?
Discussions/Announcements
Novell
- It was noted that Novell has bought Ximian and SuSE, so it appears they are very interested in getting into Linux. Central servers are a key part of what Novell likes to do, and now they also have an enterprise-edition desktop..
