LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 11 February, 2003

From Lilug

Meeting Summary

Speaker

  • Matt Newhall - Encrypted Filesystems
LILUG President Matt Newhall gave a talk on encrypted file systems. He gave some important reasons for wanting to consider doing this, such as storing financial data on a system, putting trusted information on a laptop, etc. Even swap space can be encrypted! Encrypted file systems are part of the International Kernel Patch, so you will need to get at least the 2.4.20 kernel. You will also need kernel patches (for example, the kernel will need to support CryptoAPI). Matt made a handout available, which will also be available here shortly.

Technical Problems

  1. A problem concerning Linux and Mac was brought up, but the user community present didn't have sufficient knowledge/experience to solve it, so it was suggested to bring it up on the LILUG mailing list.
  2. Another person was asking for assistance on how to use tar to install new programs.
  3. Another person was wondering how to proceed with using Knoppix
