LILUG General Meeting - Tuesday, 11 December, 2001

From Lilug

Meeting Summary

Discussions/Announcements

FLAT

The FLAT (Farmingdale Linux and Associated Technologies) club is alive; they are interested in joining up with the Linux Expo effort, but will need help from our group.

LinuxWorld

LILUG should have a booth at Linux World. For free signup, the deadline is 27 December.

Meeting Location

People from out east don't want to have to trek all the way out to Farmingdale. LILUG President Matt Newhall commented that it's inevitable that things will split geographically. It's also true that LILUG won't move, as it's already been determined to be in the "average" location, attempting to satisfy as many people as possible. So, is a solution to create a larger organization with satellite groups like Farmingdale, Stony Brook, etc.? Or would a separate LUG at Stony Brook be a better option?

Public Library Computers

Suggestion made that LILUG should get involved with setting up computers for the public at a public library. Michael Dietz works at Plainedge Library. He mentioned this could lead to a "teaching fest". In order to do this properly we would need to organize personnel from LILUG to staff the teaching center. When during the week should this be? Matt Newhall thought that weekend days would be the most attractive for the average person in LILUG.

Special Interest Groups

Members mentioned setting up some LILUG SIGs might be a good idea.

New Mailing List

Members also thought it would be a good idea to set up a separate "newbies" mailing list.

Old 486 Computers

A suggestion was made that LILUG could set up old 486s with Linux and then give them to people.
