Problems

Internet Resources for Linux Newbies
A user asked about whether there were any resources on the Net to help with the new install of Linux, especially for users with little or no Linux experience. We recommend checking the websites of the various distributions.
A rule of thumb that was suggested was to take a three-step approach. Before you start, get a listing of all the hardware on the machine. This can be particularly easy if the machine has an existing copy of Windows 9x on it (due to the hardware detection wizard). It was also pointed out that some of the latest versions of the kernel also do a pretty decent job at hardware detection. So, the steps are:
  1. Concentrate on a character-based install first.
  2. Next, move up to details like modem configuration (for PPP) and things like sound.
  3. Getting X set up is one of the more challenging things and is best left to later on.
SuSE Partitions
A person who had installed the new SuSE 6.4 distribution was wondering why a third partition (in addition to swap and /) was recommended. Our best guess was that this partition, /boot, was useful for creating an area on large disk drives that most BIOSes can access at boot time.

Raffle

The winner of the boxed Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 set was Chris Hohmann. Congratulations!

General Discussion

The rest of the meeting was devoted to small group discussions. One group focused on introductory Linux topics, another on security concerns, and a third on configuration of Linux with a cable modem.
